Macintosh printing is usually tracked directly on a workstation - there typically is no print server in a Macintosh environment. The Argos Desktop Client for Mac is installed directly on each OSX computer that should be tracked. 


By default, all printers on a Mac OSX computer will be tracked, and the following information will be extracted:

  • Username
  • Filename
  • Computer name
  • Height
  • Width
  • Pages
  • Copies
  • Date/time printed


Tracking Method

OSX uses the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) to spool and submit print jobs. The Argos Desktop Client watches print jobs as they are sent through CUPS and extracts the relevant data. 

The tracking settings are configured directly on each Macintosh. In most cases, no configuration changes are necessary. To access tracking settings, click on the "Argos" icon and choose "Preferences"

Relevant settings:

  • Functions > Print Capture > Enable print tracking on this machine: This should be checked if printing will be tracked at the workstation.
  • Advanced > Ignore jobs with zero pages: This should be unchecked in most cases. Some printers, such as HP Deskjet devices, occasionally send a second print job that has no pages along with the original job. If you experience double billing on a device, checking this box may resolve it.
  • Advanced > Enable Legacy CUPS printer names: When unchecked, the "friendly" printer name is used to identify the printer in Argos. When checked, a more unique printer name that is not configurable will be displayed. Checking this box will result in different printer names from each workstation for the same device.


Alternate tracking methods


Configuring Mac workstations to print through Windows print queues

In a large environment, confirming that all printers on all Macs are tracked as expected can be a daunting task. To simplify the process, we often recommend routing all Mac printing through print queues on a Windows server. The benefits:

  • All tracking managed in one place
  • All printing managed in one place
  • Users cannot rename printer names
  • Users cannot uninstall tracking from their workstations
  • Mac printing can take advantage of our advanced Windows color detection tracking 

With older versions of Windows and Mac operating systems, configuring the two to communicate was complicated and often flaky. However, with current (OSX 10.5 and later, Windows 2008 and later) operating systems, there is no special configuration required on the server or workstations.


Tracking via Integration/OnBoard adapters

A growing number of devices can be tracked directly at the device by our suite of Integration adapters and OnBoard clients. This method is operating system-independent, and will track printing directly at the device. Tracking via an adapter is usually the best way to achieve the most reliable tracking information.
