Occasionally you may see a warning message appear either on the home screen or the Reports & Data screen. Warnings will appear for two reasons:
- Oversize - A print job was sent with a paper size that is larger than the assigned media type allows
- Undefined - A print job was sent with a paper size name that is not yet defined
Resolving Oversize warnings
Oversize warnings can occur when a new device or media is added to Argos without the expected configuration. Some examples:
A large format plotter is using a small format media type
This warning can occur when a new device is added to the network, but not configured to use a specific media. The default media for new devices is often set to Small B&W. If a large format plotter, such as an Oce or KIP, is set to use a small paper size-based media, a warning will be shown.
- Open the Argos Manager and note the "Warnings" message under Statistics
- Click the red number next to "Warnings" to bring up the discrepancies screen
- Note the description listed for the issue. In this case, it reads "Print jobs assigned to 'Small B&W' media were recorded with dimensions 24 x 36 inches. No paper size is large enough to accommodate these print jobs."
- Click "Resolve"
- In this case, we want to assign change the media type assigned to the device. Click "Reassign to media" and select "Large B&W" from the drop-down.
- Note that the Warning count has changed
- Click Devices & Terminals and find your device. Note that the default media of the device has not been changed - only the existing records were modified by resolving the warning.
- Click the default media drop-down and choose the correct media type
Repeat these steps for any other mismatched media warnings.
A print job is sent with a paper size not listed under the paper size-based media
In this case, it reads "Print jobs assigned to 'Small B&W' media were recorded with dimensions 12 x 18 inches. No paper size is large enough to accommodate these print jobs."
- Click "Resolve"
- In this case, we want to assign a new paper size to the existing media. Select the radio button for "Add paper size to current media"
- Select Arch B (12 x18 inches) from the drop-down menu and click "OK"
- Note that the Warning count has changed
- Click Media & Costing and find your media. Note that a new paper size has been added with 0.00 as the cost and charge
- Set the cost and charge as desired
Resolving Undefined Paper Size Warnings
Undefined paper size warnings are rare, but can occur in a few instances. Some advanced tracking adapters send a paper size name rather than actual dimensions, and some Macintosh programs do not send actual dimensions, just a size. We store all common size names that are typically encountered, but occasionally a custom size name may be used. In the following example, a size name called "Tabloid_11_17" is used instead of Tabloid or 11x17.
- Open the Argos Manager and note the "Warnings" message under Statistics
- Click the red number next to "Warnings" to bring up the discrepancies screen
- Note the description listed for the issue. In this case, it reads "Device recorded jobs with paper size name Tabloid_11_17 which is undefined in Argos."
- Click "Resolve"
- In this case, we want to set Tabloid_11_17 as an alias for Tabloid, as they have the same dimensions. Click "Add alias 'Tabloid_11_17' to an existing paper size"
- If this new paper size does not match any existing size, you can create a new paper size based on its dimensions. Click "Create new paper size"
- Enter the desired name and dimensions
- Note that the Warning count has changed
- Click Media & Costing and click on your paper size on the right panel.
- Note that one or more aliases have been set
- Click "Aliases" to view the aliases for this size, then click OK
Repeat these steps for any other undefined paper size warnings.
